Microsoft to create generation data center in Mecklenburg
As reported by Virginia Business -
Microsoft Corp. plans to spend almost $500 million to create a generation data center in Mecklenburg County, making it the largest private investment in Southern Virginia.
The center, which will be Microsoft’s most advanced data center, will create 50 new jobs. Virginia competed against North Carolina and Texas for the project.
“The company’s search process was long and competitive, and a great team of players came together to show Microsoft that Mecklenburg County was the right fit for its new version of a state-of-the-art data center,” Gov. Bob McDonnell said in a statement.
McDonnell approved a $2.1 million grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund to help Mecklenburg with the project. The Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission approved $4.8 million in incentives.
The Mid-Atlantic Broadband Cooperative’s open-access fiber optic network was a key reason Microsoft selected Southern Virginia. MBC will provide fiber routes for connectivity to major interconnection points in the Eastern U.S. Microsoft also chose Virginia for the low-cost electricity from Virginia Dominion Power.

10 Ways to Control Costs in the Tech Department
Don Reisinger published a recent article on CIO Insight explaining how CIOs could help control technology costs. What others can you add to Don’s list?
- Say Goodbye to Outdated Legacy Products. One of the biggest mistakes CIOs make is that they hold on to out-dated products. Your employees might prefer the old stuff, but over the long-term, future-proofing the office should be the first goal.
- Intelligent Outsourcing. In the outsource world, value means the difference between a good decision and a bad decision. If you find the right, skilled person for the job, it will yield a generous ROI. If, instead, you settle for the cheapest alternative, regardless of skills, trouble will ensue.
- Remember Windows 7’s Windows XP Mode. As virtualization becomes an increasingly important aspect of the CIOs life, Windows 7 could be one of the most value-packed operating systems Microsoft has ever released. Why? Windows XP Mode. The operating system will work with current applications and hardware, and work with mission-critical legacy apps that need Windows XP.
- Think More About Google. While [Google Docs] not as capable as [Microsoft] Office, the software is available for free online.
- Communicate Via Facebook. As long as proper policies are in place to govern what employees can and cannot do or say, a free alternative is far superior to team-based communication solutions that will cost your company hefty fees each year.
- There Is Value In the Cloud. Several cloud-based solutions are much cheaper than their desktop counterparts. And, since they’re available from anywhere, you can increase employee productivity and utilization by allowing them to work wherever an Internet connection is available.
- Utilization Through Mobility. By giving employees a notebook computer, work can be done from anywhere. Encourage telecommuting for those who don’t need to work in the office every day.
- Netbooks Aren’t A Bad Choice. Although these lightweight computers are substantially less powerful than notebooks, they work quite well for those employees who don’t need the best and biggest computer on the market.
- Duplicate Services Are Costly. Strictly evaluate all the various products and services your employees are using to avoid overlap.
- Don’t Overlook Automation. For example, setting up an online service that allows customers to input data instead of your employees having to do so makes for a far more efficient operation.
MS Office 2011 for Mac Finally Gets Outlook
According to MacNN:
Microsoft has begun sending out invites for the Office for Mac 2011 beta, a shared e-mail indicates. Participation is being limited to people signed up with the Microsoft Connect service. The company is in fact enforcing a strict non-disclosure agreement, blocking leaks through “all forms of communication including print, broadcast, electronic, Internet publications, social media networking sites, blogs, and verbal disclosure.”
The completed suite is due to be released later this year, and should carry over a number of changes in recent Windows versions of Office, such as the ribbon interface. It will also drop the Mac-only Entourage software in favor of Outlook, and implement advanced document collaboration features. Microsoft has confirmed, though, that the suite will be 32-bit only, since not every component has been converted to Cocoa.

Get Your Google Voice Here
Google Voice is finally available for everyone, no invite necessary. Google announced this news on their Google Voice blog yesterday along with a flurry of videos on each major feature of the service.
A little over a year ago, we released an early preview of Google Voice, our web-based platform for managing your communications. We introduced one number to ring all your phones, voicemail that works like email, free calls and text messages to the U.S. and Canada, low-priced international calls and more—the only catch was you had to request and receive an invite to try it out. Today, after lots of testing and tweaking, we’re excited to open up Google Voice to the public, no invitation required.
Over the past year, we’ve introduced a mobile web app, an integrated voicemail player in Gmail, the ability to use Google Voice with your existing number and more. Over a million of you are now actively using Google Voice, and many of the features released over the past year (like SMS to email and our Chrome extension) came as a result of your suggestions, so thanks!
If you haven’t yet tried Google Voice, we can’t wait for you to try it out and let us know what you think. Check out our revamped features page to learn about everything Google Voice can do.

Your PC may also have some simple or more complex issues that Windows 7 can repair for you. Try a troubleshooting program to automatically fix those issues.
In Windows 7, the performance troubleshooter checks specifically for performance issues and the maintenance troubleshooter will look for hard drive maintenance issues. Both are quick and easy to use and may provide you with some useful suggestions.

Defrag Your Hard Drive :: 10 Ways to Tune up Your PC
This is the ninth part in a series on ‘10 Ways to Tune up Your PC’ from Ron Doyle, guest blogger for the Windows division of Microsoft. The original blog post can be found here.
Over time, files on your computer are moved around the hard drive. Eventually it takes your computer longer to find various parts of the programs which have been moved or fragmented. To boost your computer’s speed and overall performance defrag your hard drive on occasion. In Windows 7, “Disk Defragmenter” rearranges fragmented data, making your computer operate more efficiently.

If you don’t use, uninstall it :: 10 Ways to Tune up Your PC
This is the eighth part in a series on ‘10 Ways to Tune up Your PC’ from Ron Doyle, guest blogger for the Windows division of Microsoft. The original blog post can be found here.
Even a brand new computer has programs that you never use and don’t need. If you don’t use a program, uninstall it. This goes for pre-installed software, trial software you decided not to purchase, or software that you’ve replaced with an updated version.
Many unwanted programs run in the background upon startup whether you are using them or not. They take up disc space and memory. If you don’t need the program, uninstall it. One warning: If you don’t recognize a program name or know what it does, don’t uninstall it until you’ve checked to see if it’s software essential to running your PC.

When you use Disk Cleanup you will toss out those old unneeded temporary files, all the trash in your recycle bin, and many other bits and pieces that are no longer needed.
Run it on a regular basis and you will be amazed at your computer’s efficiency.
